When should my kids start doing chores?

When should my kids start doing chores? What seems like a complicated question actually has a very simple answer. —If your child is somewhere between a toddler and a teen, today would be great time. Little ones can help get themselves dressed, help pick up their toys, and help brush their teeth. As they grow, they can move onto to helping with dishes, laundry and picking up the house.

Chores are —anything we routinely do to take care of ourselves and the homes we live in. As with all learning, these life skills are learned and gained slowly overtime. Parenthood can be compared to an apprenticeship, as children learn and become experts by watching, helping and then doing. So don’t wait for the perfect time or for the perfect age. Kids love routines and they love feeling like they are contributing. Buddy up with them and let them start practicing on little things. Experience will help them learn and grow..

The pay off is teens and young adults who are confident in taking care of themselves and the jobs that come with a household.

“The goal is not to raise great kids. It's to raise kids who become great adults.” - Andy Andrews
